报告简介:
Desalination of seawater and brackish water is an important avenue to augment freshwater supply and alleviate water scarcity in regions where water resource and demand are mismatched. However, desalination is in general more energy intensive than conventional water treatment technologies due to the intrinsic energy need of salt-water separation. There are three major categories of desalination technologies as defined based on the nature of the driving force, including pressure driven, electrically driven, and thermally driven desalination technologies. Some of these technologies consume more specific energy than the others, whereas some technologies are employed to treat more saline water or/and achieve a higher recovery than the others. Rationalizing the comparison between desalination technologies requires considering the “intrinsic difficulty” of the resulting separation which can be quantified by the Gibbs free energy of separation. For the first time, we perform a comprehensive analysis of a large set of literature data to extract the specific energy consumption of different desalination process and the Gibbs free energy of separation they achieved. We also provide intuitive decomposition of the energy loss and intrinsic energy need for major desalination technologies. This analysis provides us the “big picture” about what different desalination technologies can achieve and how efficient they are, which provides insight regarding where we can move forward to make desalination capable and sustainable.
